Die Geschichte

Zwergen-Ingenieur-Miniatur – Late Night Miniatures

Barnaby would genuinely rather be an eccentric mechanic. Somewhere along the way the subterranean vault he dug to store excess parts became, to his ongoing dismay, a hub of dangerous and unsolicited secrets.

Gold is straightforward and therefore appealing. It is the forbidden knowledge, the stolen blueprints and the royal scandals people keep insisting on leaving with him that cause most of his problems. He did not set out to become the dwarf who knows which secret would topple a kingdom. He fixed the wrong cipher engine for the wrong duke twenty years ago, and things compounded from there.

Those granted an audience expect theatrics and find a tired dwarf with ink-stained hands, greeting visiting dukes and trembling assassins with the same distracted courtesy. What makes him formidable is not cunning so much as duration. Generals owe him silence. High priests owe him discretion. Two reigning monarchs owe him something considerably worse, a debt he has never once called in.
