Conjured to perch atop an ancient cathedral, the gargoyle was made to serve as a silent protector against the dark. The town below read the winged shape on the rooftops as an omen of safety, and through storm and war, through plague and famine, he watched over them from the spires and asked nothing in return.

His vigilance was not enough. One terrible night ruin swept across the land, and the cathedral that had been his birthplace collapsed into rubble. Its stained glass shattered, its sacred bells were silenced forever, and its streets were littered with the remains of the people he had failed to save. He clawed through the debris for days and found only silence.

The grief hardened into obsession. Duty curdled into control. Years later his journey brought him to Kamonalis, prosperous and proud and blind to how fragile its peace truly was, and without permission or challenge he claimed its highest tower as his own. Gates are sealed by his command now. Travellers are forbidden to leave. Every law in Kamonalis bends slowly around the gargoyle perched above the city.
