The story
The Sons are what the temple does with the ones it cannot make into Daughters.
The rite that produces a Daughter of Sekhmet is not survivable by everyone, and the temple learned, unwillingly and over a long time, that the failures do not simply die. They come back changed in the wrong direction — slower, heavier, a great deal harder to stop, and missing the part that was supposed to make it bearable. The temple houses them, honours them, and uses them, and the honesty of its own records on this point is the most uncomfortable thing in the archive.
They are never sent anywhere the Daughters could go instead. The texts are explicit about that, and the reason given is kindness.
Bigger and coarser than the Daughters, and they should paint that way — heavier musculature, duller linen, and gold that looks issued rather than earned.
