The story
The Mato were beasts of burden for nine generations before somebody put a spear on one.
It is, in hindsight, a stupid idea that worked. A Mato has no speed, no grace and no particular interest in the battle happening on its back. What it has is mass and an almost offensive refusal to be frightened. Arrows do not move it. Fire does not move it. The Mato riders learned to fight from a platform that would not flinch, and the rest of the Old World learned to respect a charge that could not be spooked into breaking off.
Veteran riders say the hardest part of the job is the dismount, because a Mato will keep going long after the fighting is done, and someone has to explain to it that everyone has gone home.
Heavy, characterful sculpts — thick hide, layered barding, and plenty of flat surface for clan markings if you want the warband to read as one force.
