The story
The Salahari ride the long crossings, and they navigate by things that have not been there for centuries.
Their route-knowledge is inherited whole — a body of directions passed down intact and never written, referencing wells that have dried, towers that have fallen, and a particular rock that is now forty miles from where the verse puts it. The Salahari know all of this. They use the verses anyway, corrected in the head, because the corrections are inherited too, and because a route that has been adjusted every generation for eight hundred years is more reliable than any map the river cities have produced.
They have been asked repeatedly to write it down. They have declined, every time, politely.
Fast riders on open ground — sun-bleached cloth over dark skin, dust on everything below the knee, and the mounts kept lean rather than heroic.
